Meet the Developers of Laurel Mountain Preserve Who Have Turned Black Mountain Green

In 2005, Art and Peg Nadel purchased the 430 acres known today as Laurel Mountain Preserve, attracted by all its breathtaking natural beauty. While builders said the property could comfortably accommodate 200 to 300 homes, the Nadels turned instead to Equinox Environmental of Asheville to survey the land's natural equity and determine how to best preserve it.

The resulting land preservation plan called for only 29 homes, and to create a protected preserve on the remainder of the property. An increasingly rare old-growth forest and unique rich cove forest had collaborated and now create a conservation easement of 40% of the property to Carolina Mountain Land Conservancy to form a preservation partnership that will be the legacy of the residents.

Art has been involved in land development and real estate investing for more than forty years. Starting in the New York City suburbs, he later moved to Florida, where he now focuses on green development and affordable housing.

Art and Peg also own and operate Home Front Homes, a company which manufactures panelized systems to build a wide range of houses from affordable homes, such as their "Katrina Cottage", to larger, more expensive custom single and multi-family homes, as well as selected commercial applications, such as retail shops and libraries. The common links across these various sized and use buildings is that all are energy efficient, extremely fast and economical to construct, plus strong enough to resist up to 200 mile an hour storms.

The Nadels are helping to lead Habitat for Humanity of Sarasota's mission to build 500 homes for 500 working families by 2012, the largest building project Habitat has ever attempted globally. Peg serves as the Chairman for this effort's "Legacy of Hope" Capital Drive that must attract $50 million in community support to achieve the ambitious goal.

Art and Peg divide their time between several businesses, as well as supporting the Sarasota Opera where Peg has been involved in various capacities for 23 years, and a variety of charities, including the Florida House Learning Center Catholic Charities, JFCS and Girls, Inc.
